Paul Moyse's Anatomy of Caricature Course

£250

Paul is a caricature artist with over 30 years of experience working in the field, creating illustrations for international magazines and has been teaching the art of caricature for over 12 years.

“Paul Moyse’s course on drawing caricatures was more than I ever expected. Not only did he teach me his wonderful caricature technique but I also learned the importance of color, value, light, composition, detail, using references, plus so much more (including computer digital sketching). I feel that my artwork has already improved by leaps and bounds and I am beyond excited to start drawing more and more. Without question, my weekly Skype sessions with Paul were time well spent. Thanks, Paul!” - KEVIN NEALON (American Actor, Comedian and Caricaturist)

Whether you'd like to wow your friends with great caricatures, advance your illustration career or simply learn a new skill - this course is for you!

By the end you will have all the knowledge necessary to create a full colour caricature from start to finish. You will learn how to identify the unique features that create a likeness and how to build a solid structure for a successful caricature. You will learn to see values, create an appealing colour palette, and choose the right pose and expression that will make your caricatures come alive to get that big reaction you're looking for!

Lesson One: Shapes, Form and the Third Dimension (1:46:25)

Our relationship with shapes and how we process them is a key part of learning to draw. How does our brain transition from seeing three-dimensional forms in the real world, to then making them two-dimensional? How can we create the illusion of the third dimension in a piece of art? In this lesson I will guide you through that process and show you how to make your drawing process feel effortless and more 'gestural'?

Lesson Two: Structure (1:54:55)

To exaggerate doesn't mean to lose or ignore the structure. In order to break the rules you have to know the rules! In fact to successfully exaggerate a feature we need to know it's structure. In this lesson we discover what we are actually exaggerating. I use a unique 3D model made specifically for this course to demonstrate how important structure is to our exaggerations. We look at the skull, the muscles of the face and see which ones perform which expressions.

Lesson Three: The Importance of Values (1:33:37)

What are 'values' in relation to painting? How do our eyes and our brains process the values in the images we see? What are brightness illusions? Some artists underestimate the power of values wanting to go straight to colour. But understanding values in art is one of the most fundamental skills that will drastically improve your ability to paint in colour. In this lesson I will answer these questions and take you through a value study demonstration.

Lesson Four: Expression and Pose (1:39:53)

The way people sit or stand, smile or frown, their facial expressions and general body language tell us everything we need to know about a person without them saying a word. In this lesson we look at the difference between a fake and genuine expression, how to break down a pose and how to use flow and energy lines to help guide your exaggerations.

Lesson Five: Asymmetry (1:31:03)

As humans we are drawn to symmetrical patterns. Many artists have a tendency to correct the asymmetry they see thinking that it will make their art better. I'm going to show you that the opposite is true, especially in caricature. This lesson explores how you can spot the asymmetrical features in your subject that make them unique, and use them to create a more believable likeness.

Lesson Six: Building a Colour Palette. Final Illustration (4:40:42)

In this final video I will show you how I paint a digital* caricature from start to finish using techniques I teach in this course. I will explain to you how to build a palette of colours to help maintain a consistent look throughout your portrait and give your work that wow factor!

*Assignments can be done traditionally or you can use any digital software of your choice (Photoshop, Procreate, Krita, Corel Painter, Clip Studio Paint etc.). Paul uses Krita for drawing and painting. Krita is available as a free download at www.krita.org.

All videos can be played downloaded and played with any media player that supports mp4 files. However if you'd like to take full advantage of the embedded chapters the VLC media player is one I recommend for this (click here for download link).
